Raider of the Seas edition by Warren H Miller Norman Saunders Tom Roberts Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
A big chunk of manly man's adventure, with not a hint of political correctness. Headhunters, pirates, stereotypes galore. Just fun.
Warren Hastings Miller was a man of action and and a man of the sea, and both facets are at the forefront of these half-dozen tales from the late 1920s/early 1930s. The stories center on Captain Jim Colvin and Johnny Pedlow, joint owners of the Pulo Siburu, a steamerette operating from the Indian Ocean to the South China Sea. While they sometimes ferried cargo by the ton or accepted the occasional paying passenger, their bread and butter was inter-island trading directly with the natives, which brought them into contact with everyone from bellicose savages to refined sultans, as well as a deposed sultan looking to get his sultanate back when the Dutch authorities were slow to act. The dialogue is as dated as the world in which these two palookas live, but the writing remains crisp and the action non-stop. There are the usual stereotypes of the day, but you also get the impression that the depictions are more true than not, garnered from Miller's extensive travels through the region, and there's no real sense of malice from either the writer of the characters. For the reader looking for adventure stories that don't pretend to be anything else, written by an author who knew ships as well as he did the region and its inhabitants, "Raider of the Sea" is a great book, sure to send you to the publisher (Black Dog Books) looking for more of the same.
I liked this book it was written before the pc era. They just tell it like it was. Good stories from a interesting time. Enjoy the adventures.
