A Glimpse of the Chihuahuan Desert/Una Vislumbre del Desierto Chihuahuense eBook Patricia Mihok Donna Yargosz Reviews
As a resident of the Chihuahuan desert, I highly recommend this book. Illustrations are wonderful. Excellent book. It is appropriate for both adults and children.
This is a fascinating bilingual (English/Spanish) book with lovely images.
I believe this book was selected as a winner in the New Mexico-Arizona Book Awards. This is a little gem about a geographical area that few people really understand yet it is one of the largest desert areas in all of North America. Well-written and nicely illustrated. Highly Recommended for all audiences.
What a lovely book. It is visually appealing and highlight informative, both for the young reader and the adult. Anyone who has an interest in the Chihuahuan desert will enjoy the beautiful photographs and their accompanying texts that cover the floral, fauna, and climate of this particular desert. The text is in both English and Spanish, and quite appropriate for where the Chihuahuan desert is located, partly in Mexico and also in the parts of the U.S. Southwest. The glossary of terms is also very helpful. For the traveler who buys books as souvenirs, this would be an excellent choice. For the nature lover, it is also a great choice. Very enjoyable.
This slender volume is a wonderful book on many counts. It is lavishly illustrated with beautiful photographs. It introduces the reader to an environment that is full of a profusion of plants and animals greatly in excess of what one expects on first hearing the word "desert." The bilingual text (each text page contains a brief statement in English followed by the same information in Spanish) offers an amiable way to learn the words in English and Spanish that apply to the subject at hand. Definitely a five-star book.
As a picture book of the Chihuahuan Desert, this book is a winner. Photos of the landforms, plants, and animals are both lovely and informative. In addition, however, the paragraph-long captions (in both English and Spanish) explain the beauty and uniqueness of this area and how its terrain and climate created it. There is also a glossary (again, in both languages) and a list of resources for further exploration. This is a book that will be enjoyed by the parents and older children reading it as well as the younger children being read to. It makes me want to visit!
The desert lives! Patrcia Mihok does a great job showing us how in a way that's beautiful and accessible, to English and Spanish readers alike. Her book is a comprehensive yet compact intro and guide to America's desert lands, the Chihuahan Desert in particular. She describes how evaporation and elevation, weather and water, time and mountains produce the desert and how the desert, in turn, provides everything from dust devils to caverns, dunes, 3000 varieties of growing things and an animal population that includes the biggest spiders, smallest mammals and even desert fish. The pictures are worth the price of admission. It's a book that families can share, across generations, and that all will find entertaining and a useful educational tool. I enjoyed this book very much.
